Postoperative delirium after cardiac surgery is associated with increased death rates.

The study sought to identify risk factors associated with the development of postoperative delirium in elderly patients after elective cardiac surgery. The study included 113 patients aged 65 or older undergoing elective cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.

Regarding statins, the study found that patients taking statins had a 10% increased risk of delirium compared to patients not taking statins.

Affirmation, chocolate and clay.

Today I got that relaxation is just as important as work. I am creating a great balance of work, play and relaxation in my life.

Today I ate a lot of raw chocolate which made me very happy! Including the Earth Diet Chocolate Almond Butter Cups and Noah's Rock'n Raw Chocolates. I also had a bentonite clay drink and diatomaceous earth drink.

Gratitude vs. Contentment: How to Stay Thankful {and Hungry}

The practice of gratitude has changed my life. Whenever I find myself spiraling into one of my internal brat-a-thons, I quickly snap myself out of it by reminding myself of all the things I'm thankful for. I wake up each morning with a grateful heart, and I truly take nothing for granted.

But I am also insatiable. This means I am on a constant mission to improve my life, have new experiences, and settle for nothing less than what my soul craves. It means I'm not satisfied with many things because I know they can be better.

That dichotomy has raised a serious question for me: how do we separate gratitude from contentment?

I've struggled with this inner battle for a while now. And here's what I've come up with: it's a gentle balance. For every thing I want to strive for, I remind myself of one thing I'm grateful for. For example: I'd love to live and work around the world. I see myself spending a few months in London, a few months in Paris, and a few months here in New York, running my business globally. I consume myself with this vision often because I am the queen of manifesting, and also because it's really damn fun to imagine. It also takes careful planning. I'm not there yet, but I will be. When I think about my vision, I don't curse my little apartment in New York or the full-time job I'm still in (still...in....). I think about how amazing it is that I have a roof over my head and have a decent salary that I can use to fund my big dream. See the difference?

So while it's so important to be grateful for everything you have, don't allow that to make you content with things that aren't right for you. Keep searching, keep climbing, and keep designing a world that turns you on. But don't begrudge the one you're currently living in.

I'd love to know what your thoughts are on this. Leave me a comment below!

Review: Wave Bar

So y'all know how I'm obsessed with bars, right? I've only reviewed roughly a million varieties.

And I've just had my mind blown again by a completely revolutionary bar - a hidden veggie bar with half a serving of fruit AND half a full serving of vegetables in every bar that still has a taste and texture that would make my 8 year old sister ask to have it in her lunchbox.

Wave Bar is pretty new and still only has two flavors, Baked Apple and Mixed Berry, but quality over quantity definitely holds true here. They may not have a laundry list of varieties (yet, I hope) but the two that they have are delicious and so nutritious that they're easily a great addition as a daily snack.

Around 75% of American children don't get their daily vegetable requirement, but these snacks make it easy to remedy that - the very first ingredient is Natural G Foods' special blend of vegetables and fruits!

After all, it's a food company that's made by health-conscious parents for health-conscious parents, so they know exactly what you need to make it work.

They know what parents want in a bar and they know what kids don't. They know that detectable veggies in a bar will have kids running and screaming from the table, but that a soft, sweet, normal-looking bar will keep both parties satisfied and prevent a snack-time war.

Um, kale in a kid's snack bar? But I swear you can't taste it (or, equally important for kids!) see it at all.

They look just like your standard Nutrigrain-style soft baked fruit and grain bar and taste the same - sweet, chewy, soft, and vaguely pastry-like. AKA, very kid friendly.

And just me-friendly, in general. I travel a lot and especially this fall, what with trying to get a job and be a gainfully employed adult next year (definitely a more attractive option than taking my expensive Harvard diploma and heading into Boston to be a hobo) I'm traveling a lot for interviews and whatnot. Last week, I spent more than half of the week outside of my state and was in five different states in three days.

Um, EXHAUSTING. But I beasted it.

Emperor Kuzco style.

Still, a hectic schedule like that is not exactly healthy-eating-friendly. When I'm out and about, carbs take over (even more than usual, haha) and produce doesn't really make it into the picture. I don't want to risk food poisoning and I don't want to schlep a mini-fridge around with me (aka: that's not possible) so bars, sandwiches, cereal bags, and fast food make up the bulk of my diet. This has the comforting carb-y taste and convenience, but also some veggies in there to make sure that I don't become all sorts of vitamin deficient while I'm out and about trying to make a future happen!

And once life settles down a bit more (or, if life ever settles down a bit) I love babysitting and these are the kind of snack that I can pack in my bag and enjoy with the kiddos at the park or when we're slaying dragons down by the river.

Um, no I'm not five. I swear I'm a grown-up, I have a government-issued ID and everything.

Anyway, make sure to check out Wave bars here, where you can learn more and even order some online!

Don't these sound amazing?

Do you have/want kids?

Where are you in your career journey?

My two most popular health tips.

364 days to book launch! I started the morning by having a beautiful nourishing sleep in! I appreciated it, and something I learned from Louise Hay is to say thank you to the bed for a wonderful nights sleep!

At noon I met with Steph Hendel who is a health coach and from the Raw Sistahs

We walked through Central Park, we actually walked from one end to the other! It was a gorgeous day with blue sky and the sun shining so bright! Ending at Columbus Circle Wholefoods and had a beet juice. It was so fun and refreshing to spend time with someone the same age as me on the same mission to share health with the world! Steph was beaming with energy and vibrancy! We talked about being young entrepreneurs, about our story to how we got here, and things we may face in the future :) We were also present to the beautiful nature in Central Park! She filmed me for her Vlog and asked my two most popular health tips which are:

1. What is the quickest and healthiest AND affordable health tip people can incorporate into their lives daily?
LEMON WATER! A great refreshing drink that is alkalizing, high in vitamin C, immune boosting and raw. I find that when people start the day with lemon water they choose healthier options throughout the day. It also helps with digestion, and if you find yourself eating any junk food, drink lemon water after and it will help to move the toxins out of your system, it also declares to your body that you are committed to a healthy well nourished body!

2. Recipe I'd like to share?
YES of course! One of the most popular recipes are 3-INGREDIENT CHOCOLATE!
1. Cacao powder
2. A base - ground up almonds (almond meal), or any other nut. Or for nut allergies use sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds!
3. A sweetener - either dates, honey or maple syrup!
Action: MIX IT ALL UP! Then you can roll it into balls, or squares for brownies, or use it as a pie base! You can also add things like salt, vanilla, peanut butter for Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls!

Here is the video of our adventure!

Today in preparation to my new book being published by Hay House in 364 days, I defined what I want to feel like and look like the day of the launch. I really want to find a healthy balance between work, play and relaxation. I find myself working a lot more than anything else, and feeling guilty if I am relaxing. I am on a mission so I constantly find myself working. My idea of health is a balance.

This weather in NYC is cold, and makes me want to snuggle up in bed with a cup of tea and cookie and watch movies. I notice my body is not as productive in colder weather, so I am drinking lots of tea, and eating soups to keep my body warm and energized!

Yesterday on the first day of the countdown I craved a hamburger and fries. I didn't have it, instead I went to Pure Food and Wine and had divine raw foods with friends! Today I was craving gummi bears, I didn't have it. Instead I had beet juice. I know tomorrow I am making Earth Diet Chicken Nuggets so I am using today as a cleanse day, and I've had a bentonite clay drink, diatomaceous drink, green tea, beet juice and phresh greens. Getting my nutrition from liquids. I love cleanse days.

The day of the book launch I want to feel really fulfilled that I have done everything I could to get the message out about health and help as many people as possible with my recipes! Before I started the Earth Diet I wished I could be free of binge eating on junk foods, now I dream of being free of fear and negativity that holds me back at times. I find myself thinking, if only I could never have another negative feeling or thought ever again! I would have so much more energy and be so productive! But I realize life happens, so I will do my best to live day by day!

Starting this countdown has really made me value every day, I have 364 days to go and I wonder how each one will unfold, and I wonder what each day will be! Of course I have a schedule but life always has unexpected meetings and experiences awaiting!

Join me in the health movement! Share recipes to your friends and family! There are hundreds for free on my website www.theearthdiet.com

And of course when the book comes out next October it will make a great holiday gift and new years gift! For this year, the original Earth Diet book that I produced last year is still available and will not be available as of February 2014, so if you want a limited edition book signed by me go to this link to order: http://www.theearthdiet.org/book.html

I believe the people and the earth are getting healthier. Do you?

Lots of love!
Liana

The beginning of the book launch! 365 day COUNTDOWN!

Hi everyone!

Wow what a full on day!

I made a big public announcement today for the first time on LIVE RADIO! Go to www.naturalnewsradio.com for the archives!

I have officially started the countdown 365 days to the launch of my new book The Earth Diet published by Hay House! The book is set to be published October 28th 2014.

I spent today recording for radio majority of the day, and then out to dinner with friends and co-workers and health advocates at Pure Food and Wine the greatest healthy restaurant in Manhattan!

If you are not a subscriber to The Earth Diet (you can subscribe here), this is the email that was sent out about my announcement:
Hi everyone!!! In case you missed me live on the radio today, I announced my big news for the first time to the public!
If you want to listen to the radio show here is the archive.
So here is my big announcement!!!
I have been holding this in since April. Why? For many reasons that I will share with you one day. Firstly i want you all to know what you can count on me for. You can always count on me for being authentic, open, honest and real. And i mean that! My life depends on it! i have a responsibility to hold integrity with my work doing The Earth Diet. It is all about honest food labels and real foods without toxic chemicals.
So as my job as the author of The Earth Diet, and the creator since starting my daily blog to break my junk food addiction, it is my job and commitment to you to be real about my experiences while living this lifestyle. This does make me feel vulnerable but i would rather be honest about my life and the food we eat, than to not share authenticness. You won't ever see me promote a food product that uses toxic harmful chemical ingredients.
Why am I saying all this? Because with what I am about to tell you comes a story. A story of epic ups and downs. Some people may think my life is perfect because i live this lifestyle, other people have told me they idolize me and they dream that i am this perfect health miracle. I am not to be idolized and as i am exactly the same as everyone. i am just living my purpose and doing what i feel like i came here to do: To live a natural powerful life that I love and to share it with others. Inside of that comes a lot of challenges i am faced with. I am not going to share all of that now, i have our entire lifetime to share that with you all!
And as of today a 365 day countdown begins. And I feel like I am about to have a baby and in 365 days from now that baby will be born although it is not a baby... It is a book!!! But not just any book!!! A book published by Hay House!
It is official that Hay House will publish The Earth Diet book next October 28th exactly 365 days from now!!!
This is a big deal! And I would love to share with you about how I got signed by them! And the good thing is I have 365 days to prepare for the book launch, and I will share it with you all. I am inviting you to come on this journey with me and see how it all unfolds!!!!
Hay house is a dream come true. it was unbelievable to sign a contract with them. It took me months to accept it. It had been a dream of mine since 18! I had this dream for 8 years and it came true! Just like that one day it came true!!! Something that had always been a dream became real!
Another Hay House best selling author Gregg Braden says "we are already in the next age, the age of meeting ourselves again." It's time for me to face that I am a powerful leader who has transformed my health. Life has not been perfect and I am dealing with life just like every other human being! Just like you! And I have found a way to have a great relationship with food! So I welcome you on my journey.
When I was 18 I read Eckhart Tolle's book "The Power Of Now" which really kick started my spiritual journey. I knew then I wanted to have a book one day like Eckhart Tolle, but I had no idea it would be The Earth Diet!
I then went on to read Wayne Dyer's book, Louise Hay, Esther Hicks, Bruce Lipton, Debbie Ford, Marianne Williamson and Anita Moorjani learning that they ALL share the same book publisher! Hay house! I learned that these people are the leading world changers and combined have sold over 500,000 million books and they go on Oprah, become best sellers, and really make a positive impact in the world! These are the people I dreamed of being surrounded by!
How The Earth Diet book will affect the world...

It will help a lot of people to transform their health using these recipes. It will help people to lose excess weight to heal themselves! To replace their favorite junk foods with healthy chocolate and ice creams and cheesecakes! It will make the Earth a less chemical place and a more organic and harmonious place to live! And Hay House are making The Earth Diet book available in all the Barnes and Noble book stores in the world, at airports, organic stores, on kindle and amazon! It will be much more accessibly available than what I could have done on my own.
As some of you know I self published The Earth Diet book in 2012 which now will become the original limited! Consider it an art piece! This book will be discontinued I think by February so grab a copy of that one now if you want a collectors item!
Hay house have redesigned the book. I have worked on a new manuscript since April this year! It has triple the amount of recipes and of course it's very well edited!
I am so excited to go on this journey with you! Since after all this is for the Earth, not just me! I have included your favorite recipes and tips in the book and will make a great gift for your family and friends! From all the questions I have received from you in the past few years, I have included in the book!
My experience since the day being signed in April is... Acceptance of success and then pressure to perform. To cope with this I have created the possibility that I will live my life with presence, peace, confidence and lots and lots of love.
This all started because I wanted so bad to break my junk food habit so I started a blog and readers held me accountable. I broke that and am free of it. The Earth Diet recipes and ideas essentially saved me and now I share it with others. the joy of others also finding freedom around food and health is the most fulfilling thing I can ever experience.
I invite you on my 365 day countdown to the launch! Welcome to The Earth Diet! I love you!
I have no idea what I am in for haha! So excited and nervous to see how it unfolds. I am realistic I know it won't always be easy. I will certainly be faced with challenges, but I do know I have a choice of how I face each thing and what I do from that. I still crave junk food when I get stressed but I am not willing to let stress beat me. I am on the pursuit of a happy, healthy, peaceful, fulfilled life!
I heard an interesting thing from a fellow Hay House author this weekend at the "I Can Do It Event" in NYC that "we are drowning with information but starving for wisdom..." I believe everything we need is within us. You already know how to live a natural life that you love, you already know what your body needs. I'm just here to provide recipes you might love!
Love,
Liana

Soy associated with an increased risk of asthma

This study was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2003 Sep;78(3):414-21

So You Want to Get a Job: Dressing the part

In this installment of So You Want to Get a Job, I'm suggesting a pretty standard job interview outfit that will keep the attention where it belongs (on your brilliant resume) and off of less relevant topics (the birthmark on your thigh).

interview Outfit

Dolce Gabbana shirt top
€580 - farfetch.com

L K Bennett pleated skirt
€70 - lkbennett.com

Patent leather pumps
€25 - maurices.com

Lauren Ralph Lauren leather satchel purse
€225 - piperlime.gap.com

Cluster earrings
€22 - swellcaroline.com

If I can say only thing, it's this: JOB INTERVIEW TIME IS NOT THE TIME TO SHOW WHAT YOUR MAMA GAVE YOU. That (a) won't get you a job, (b) may keep you from getting a job you otherwise would have, and (c) will get you a bad reputation.

DON'T DO IT. Save your dignity and keep those skirts knee-length and longer, even if that's not at all what you normally wear. I have nothing against your legs, but they probably shouldn't be on display when you're trying to be taken seriously as a young professional.

Also, don't go for your crazy high heels, enormous costume jewelry, or bright eyeshadow. Remember that you're outfit should be more or less neutral and you should be the one standing out!

What do you normally wear to interviews?

Do you have a go-to interview outfit?

Easy Italian Dressing (C1)

Easy Italian Dressing (C1)
Recipe Author: Simmie Sinow

Combine the following into a container suitable for using for salad dressing:

1 cup oil
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 tsp onion powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp dried mustard
2 garlic cloves-minced (I used 1/2 tsp granulated garlic)
1/2 tsp italian seasoning

Refrigerate when combined.  When ready to use, shake thoroughly to stir the ingredients together well.

This can also be used as a marinade for chicken, etc.  When using it for this, it’s recommended to add some more of the Italian Seasoning to the mix.

Brittany's Overnight Oatmeal Recipes (C3)

Brittany's Overnight Oatmeal Recipes (C3)
Recipe Author: Brittany Simpson

Keep an eye out on this recipe post, as we will post variations for different flavors from time to time.

Pictured: Brittany’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Overnight Oatmeal

With all of the following, mix all ingredients together well and refrigerate overnight!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana C3 B2B
1/3 cup whole rolled oats
1/3 cup plain nonfat Kefir
¾ cup unsweetened almond milk
2 Tbsp natural peanut butter
½ Tbsp cocoa powder
1 Tbsp sugar-free banana cream pudding mix
1 Tbsp chia seeds (optional)
1 packet Truvia or Stevia (2 tsp=1 packet)

Chocolate Cherry C3  B2B
1/3 cup whole rolled oats
1/3 cup plain nonfat Kefir
3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 Tbsp chia seeds (optional)
1/2 Tbsp cocoa powder
1/2 cup frozen cherries
1 packet natural almonds (crushed)
2 truvia packets or 4 tsp Stevia
1 Tbsp Walden Farms chocolate sauce

Fat enough. Coming to terms with weight when it’s less than ideal.

I don’t know which made me saddest—her sense of vindication when reporting the oncologist’s orders: “I don’t want to see any more weight loss”, or her distress that her weight was up 5 pounds. Or perhaps it was her pride in getting down to the lowest adult weight she has seen in many decades. Ahh, the perks of esophageal cancer!

She’s lived so tormented by her weight, berated by doctors and non-supportive family members to reach for something unattainable, to get thin, from the time she was a pretty, young, school-age girl. “You’re beautiful”, they’d say, “if only you could lose some weight.” Perfect labs and low normal blood pressure were not good enough. No, she didn’t look fat on paper.

And yet her obesity just might have been the source of her potentially fatal illness. There. I’ve said it. Admittedly, GERD, gastroesophageal reflux, is linked with manyfactors, and obesity is just one of them.  But after a decade living on antacids, popping Rolaids like LifeSavers—no pun intended—with a blood sugar approaching diabetic levels, she had gastric bypass. The GERD? Finished! Antacids were no longer a fixture like Kleenex and lipstick in her purse. Yes, she was free of heartburn and indigestion—and her blood sugars dropped to normal. With her 90 pound weight loss came a reversal in symptoms and the promise of a better life.

So it came as a quite a shock last year to learn that she had esophageal cancer. And hers, located at the very bottom of the esophagus near the stomach, was not a result of alcohol or smoking but from many years of damage from acid reflux.

GERD can lead to changes in the cells of the esophagus—between 5 and 10 % with GERD get Barrett’s.  And Barrett’s Esophagus can develop into cancer, with an overall lifetime risk of 5%

Could it have been prevented in her case?

Sure, earlier screening by endoscopy to evaluate progression to Barrett’s sooner could’ve helped. And being more proactive with a procedure called ablation to wipe out the changed “Barrett’s” cells would have helped too.

As for weight loss?

It’s not that she didn’t try. Perhaps she was genetically meant to be a large woman with a high BMI. Still, she could have worked in more activity, walks at least, something, setting realistic, achievable goals. And stress reduction to prevent emotional overeating and anxiety-driven overeating.

Yes, those might have helped her weight and subsequent chronic reflux and possibly prevented her cancer. But in our society it would never have been enough. She would still be viewed as obese, with the stigma we project on that label. Doctors would still say her weight was too high, falsely envisioning the fast food drive-ins she never frequents. (Actually, her meals have been quite healthy and balanced for as long as I could remember.)

In spite of her post cancer, post surgical weight loss of more than 40 or 50 pounds—honestly I don’t know how much exactly—following the doctor’s orders and not striving to lose more weight is quite a challenge. Self-acceptance doesn’t suddenly appear at age 75 when it has been long absent.

So please don’t wait until changing is a matter of life and death. Seek support for working on self-acceptance. And try to see your weight as just a number—not a reflection on your character, nor your motivation, nor your fitness level or your health.

Thanks for reading.

And yes, I've written about this before with a bit of a different focus.

Review: Bestowed Box's October Box

Remember how October is Non-GMO month?

Bestowed Box is participating this year with a special non-GMO Box put together by nutritionist and founder Heather Bauer! Everything in the box is 100% GMO-free, in addition to generally healthy and delicious, like the box's contents always are.

What are GMO's and why do we care? The short version is that GMO's are Genetically Modified Organisms, meaning that they're foods from plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses, or other plants and animals. Why is Frankenfood maybe not the best idea?

Well, if Frankenstein didn't give you a clue...

It is the Most Important Meal of the Day, after all...

...sometimes messing with nature isn't the best idea. Likewise, it might be better to leave the spookiness to your Halloween costume and keep it out of your food.

It's not that hard to do so, as Heather shows us all with the tasty, healthy treats in her October box.

From sweet, un-junked candy bars (UNREAL Peanut Butter Cups - no corn syrup, GMOs, hydrogenated oils, or artificial colors/flavors) to the savory (Way Better Snacks Simply Beyond Black Bean Tortilla Chips) and everything in between, there's something for everyone.

Or everything for me, teehee. I loved it all. But, um, this part of the box?

Made for me, or what? I had just eaten up the last of my epic granola stash and you know I'll never turn down a good bar (the Cinnamon Raisin Fiber Love bar definitely counts - you know my GnuFoods love) so I kind of died when I saw this.

AND YES, THE GRANOLA BAG IS A FULL-SIZED BAG OF GRANOLA. The end. Buy this box now, it's CHOCOLATE.

Speaking of which...

These UNREAL Peanut Butter Cups are as good as their Reese's counterparts, but a lot more natural. Want to be the neighborhood favorite of both the parents and the kids this Halloween? Hand these out and in the full-size.

You know the Full Size House was THE house to go to on Halloween, everyone hit them up first - which has the extra bonus of meaning you're done with the trick-or-treating early enough to hit up the best Halloween parties. Win-win!

Bestowed Box is great for getting to learn about, and try, a variety of healthy, tasty new treats. If you really love any of them, you can find them in larger amounts in their online store. A bunch of this month's snacks are on special sale through November 14, so don't waste time to check them out - I know that the chickpea snacks and fiber bars are at the top of my buy-next list!

And here's some really great news - with the coupon code HELLOTEN103 you can get your first box for only $10 from now through November 20 - that's almost 50% off, so hurry to sign up!

Do you avoid GMO's?

What are you going to be for Halloween?

Have you tried Bestowed Box?

I don't know Lily Myers, whose YouTube clip follows, but I know lots of 'Lily Myers'. She is strong and powerful as she describes her mother and herself and the culture which helped to shape her, for better and for worse. She is painfully aware of eating disorders and the grip they can have on us.

Please watch it. But don't blame your mothers, or your grandmothers, just as you can't blame them for the cancer and diabetes genes they pass on to you.

And make your voice heard--please don't keep silent, waiting for all the others to share their seemingly more important thoughts.

What did you think of her poetry?
