I come from a family of chocoholics.
I also come from Africa (South Africa, to be exact).
Africa + Chocolate = MADECASSE!
Madecasse is a gourmet chocolate company that goes one step further than just buying fair trade cocoa. The cofounders volunteered in Africa through the Peace Corps and, while volunteering overseas, fell in love with Madagascar.
They also learned a shocking fact: while 70% of the world's cocoa comes from Africa, less than 1% of the chocolate is made there. That's a lot of lost profit for the people of the affected countries - money that they need to enrich their countries, educate their citizens, and forge forward towards becoming first world nations!
Madecasse decided that they wanted to start the change - so they started making fair trade chocolate that not only uses fair trade cocoa from Madagascar, but is also made in Madagascar!
They currently produce 9 different chocolate bar flavors, as well a vanilla and two dark chocolate baking bars, in 63% and 70% cocoa each.
I tried the Sea Salt & Nibs (63% cocoa, crunchy & a touch of salt):
Each bar is 2 servings and comes in a parchment envelope. The Sea Salt & Nibs is creamy dark chocolate with just the right touch of crunch and bit of salt. This bar, already, proves that doing good tastes good, too!
Next up was the 80% cocoa bar.
It's a very intense dark chocolate (as their intensity meter on the front of the packet lets you know ahead of time), but it's not dry or flaky, as some really dark chocolates can be. Instead, it's a smooth, creamy bar. But very, very dark - so be forewarned! I really enjoyed it :)
Last, but far from least, was the Arabica Coffee bar.
It was my favorite, so it gets extra photos!
If you like chocolate-covered espresso beans, there's no way that you won't love this!
And, like any good Willy Wonka style chocolate bar, it comes wrapped in gold foil (all of their bars do, by the way).
The nibs are nestled in little pockets, the milk chocolate is dark and beyond creamy, and the coffee flavor is intense. But in the most delightful way!
I'm not a big coffee drinker, but this is the perfect way to stay awake during a long study session!
Or just in general. :) I love how Madecasse makes really awesome chocolate while doing a great deal of good! When eating chocolate can be a good deed for others, that's definitely a good thing!
I'm hoping this counts for getting me good karma? I'm shortlisted for a major national department store ad campaign and I really, really, really want to book it, especially since I'm so close!!
Anyway, I recommend that you all do a little (yummy) good and order some chocolate today, but one of you will also win three taster bars (in the three flavors reviewed above) in a giveaway that Madecasse is generously sponsoring!
Enter through Rafflecopter below - you have until November 8 to do so!
