But just so that all of my American readers don't feel left out (I'm in Boston, after all, and have never actually been to Australia myself) here are some new (to me) cookies from the USA!
Oregon seems to be a hotspot for healthy treats lately. First there were the Skout Natural bars, now the Sunna's raw vegan cookies...
Don't be fooled, these raw vegan cookies are BIG. Like, big as your palm (and then some, since they're nice and thick!). The only thing that I didn't like is that if you go find the nutritionals online, you'll notice that a serving is a half cookie - considering the size and richness of these cookies, that's plenty. But the whole deceptive packaging thing is something that I'm not a fan of in general, especially since when I open something, I'll usually finish it if it can be finished in one go. I'd prefer it if they sold these in single serve packets, for that reason.
But other than that, they're awesome! They're raw, they're vegan, they're all organic and they're even packed in biodegradable plastic! How's that for eco-friendly? They're also made out of just a few healthful ingredients, so they're as good for you as they are for the environment.
These minimally-processed cookies come in three varieties: chocolate coconut, chocolate mint, and apple pie. Being the chocoholic that I am, I tried the chocolate coconut and chocolate mint.
Both of which were DELICIOUS.
I preferred the chocolate mint, as I love that combo in general and the chocolate coconut was a bit too coconutty for my tasted. You need to be a real coconut lover for that one - it's almost all shredded coconut (that is, in fact, the primary ingredient in the cookie)!
And there's even more coconut on top! The chocolate does pair very nicely with the coconut and I really enjoyed the addition of the almonds - it's like a grown up Girl Scout Caramel Delite (Samoa?) cookie! It's a lot healthier and a lot more filling, however - I did actually end up splitting this into two snacks, because it's so rich (but all from the nuts and natural whole foods) and so satisfying that you just automatically stop and know that's enough.
Though I had a bit of a coconut overload, I'd certainly eat these again!
But the chocolate mint?
Oh. My. Goodness. Sooo melt-in-your-mouth mint chocolatey with no coconut, but lots and lots of dark chocolate and date and mint and nuts. It doesn't taste like dates or have the texture of pureed dates - the base is literally like dark chocolate bar (but not super dark - more like a 50-55% bar, not bitter at all!). It's simultaneously refreshing and decadent, cool and creamy. If you pop it in the freezer for ten minutes (I'm not sure if that's 'legal' in the raw foodie book, but the whole point of me sharing raw and vegan treats is usually not for the raw vegans - it's to see which of them the rest of us more 'average' Americans can enjoy) it's ridiculously delicious!
You do not need to be raw or vegan or a health food enjoyer to like these, or definitely not to like the chocolate mint cookie! You can be a die-hard Mrs. Fields fan and I seriously believe that you will still love these. That's the beauty of well-done healthy foods - you'd love them even if they weren't healthy and without knowing how healthy they are. Then the healthiness is just an extra feel-good bonus!
